What items to use to separate sand, gravel, salt, and iron filings?
This is for a science project and so far I can only figure out that I can use the bar magnet to separate the iron filings, but I'd need to list it in order. The items I can use are: a piece of wire screen, a large beaker, filter paper, hot plate, and tweezers.
Remove the iron filings with a magnet.
dissolve the salt by adding water and filtering through the filter paper
Let the stuff on the filter paper dry then pick out the pieces of gravel with the tweezers, leaving the sand.
You don't really need the wire screen but you might be able to use it instead of the tweezers. If you pour the sand-gravel mixture through the screen the sand would go through and the gravel wouldn't if the holes in the screen were small enough. Since you don't know the size of the holes or the gravel the tweezers are better.
